Improvers Navigation Day
Duration: 5 hours
Ratio: 1 to 4
Cost: £40 per person
CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN, AVIEMORE
Saturday 14th November 1000-1500
Sunday 15th November 1000-1500
We can also run the course privately at any location across Scotland, for a minimum group size of 4 (or £160).
This 5-hour session is the perfect way to take your navigation skills to the next level. This is suitable for those who have attended the Beginners Navigation Course, or already have basic navigation skills (understanding of grid references, contours, taking and following bearings).
We will navigate to several different locations, discussing various different strategies including timing, pacing, terrain descriptions, attack points and catching features. We will also practice interpreting our surroundings and relating this to the map.
The maximum group ratio will be 1:4, meaning there will be plenty of time for practice and individual tips/feedback. I am a fully qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and have competed in multiple navigation running races.
What to Bring
You must bring your own compass. This is in an excellent investment to make! I will provide each person with a laminated map which we will use throughout the session.
The following kit is compulsory: Comfortable walking boots with ankle support (we will be walking on rough ground off the paths) // walking trousers (not jeans) // baselayer + fleece + spare layer (we will be standing around for discussion so you may get colder than usual) // waterproof jacket // full drink bottle (1 litre) // snacks.
Depending on the weather, waterproof trousers, hat + gloves may also be required – I will advise nearer the time.
The meeting point and time will be confirmed depending on your specific course
You will be able to contact me by phone or WhatsApp.
