About Rocks and Trails

Rocks and Trails are a local provider of rock climbing and mountain adventures, based in the Scottish Highlands. We organise bespoke guiding and instruction, working with you to create your perfect adventure! Our focus is on safety, fun and personal development, whilst helping you build incredible memories to last a lifetime.

Rocks and Trails was founded by Anna Wells with a vision to share her passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for the mountains. Following a career change from Medicine, Anna is a fully qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI) and International Mountain Leader (IML). She is an accomplished climber and Alpinist, having summited 55 4000m Alpine peaks, represented Britain in numerous ice climbing world cups, scaled El Capitain and set the female Cuillin Ridge Speed Record on Skye in summer and winter.

Most guiding and instruction is provided by Anna unless otherwise discussed at your time of booking. We are delighted to now be working with a small team of freelancers – find out more about us below.

Matt Pavitt

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and a level 2 mountain bike leader.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Europe in the shadow of Mont Blanc where I spent most of my days ski touring around the Mont Blanc massif. I used to compete on the European Freeride circuit but through touring, mentors and watching guides I found the bigger mountains and discovered a love for climbing.

When I’m not out trad or winter climbing I’m out guiding and instructing; my favourite thing in the world is to take people on adventures they never thought they’d have. I also love teaching folk the appropriate techniques and skills for them to be able to take on challenges by themselves. My job has taken me to the Northern Scottish sea stacks, Tower ridge on Ben Nevis, the Cuillin Ridge on Skye and all the way down to the sea cliffs of Pembroke. I feel very privileged to work in what I enjoy and I hope to see you very soon on your next adventure!

John Briggs

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, International Mountain Leader

John’s love for the outdoors was fostered whilst growing up; by both family holidays and youth outdoor programmes – an adventure in a mountainous arena was never far away. This passion was nurtured into a career after a spell as an accountant in Hull! He knows how precious time in the mountains is and is passionate that your trip exceeds your expectations. His adventures and expeditions have seen him climb, ski, trek and fly (paragliding) on 6 continents!

Anna Wells

Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, International Mountain Leader

Hi, I’m Anna! Growing up in the Scottish Highlands, the mountains have always been a huge part of my world. My greatest happiness always comes from sharing mountain experiences with others, and sharing the wide spectrum of emotions that are felt along the way: excitement, apprehension, challenge, exhaustion, exhilaration, fear, overcoming, and total happiness.  It is a huge privilege to be able to introduce people to the magical world of climbing and mountaineering and I love being a part of that journey.
